In 1891, to improve the draughting, the 225 feet x 8
feet internal diameter chimney was built by Messrs W. A. Peters of
Manchester at Whitfield colliery. The site for the chimney happened to
be on the outcrop of the Little Row coal where an earlier working made
it difficult to obtain a firm foundation. This difficulty was overcome
and the chimney was built to become a landmark for miles around. In gale
force winds there was an all round roll of about 4 inches at the top of
the chimney.
