Two lamp checks were given to each man along with his lamp at the start of the shift . One check was handed to the banksman before descending the shaft. This then was taken to the time office for verification before going back to the lamp house. On returning to the surface, the man returned his lamp and check to the lamp house. Two checks together with his lamp showed he was out of the mine.
