Early in the 1921 strike striking miners began working
the coal outcrops at Chell Heath which the company held on lease from
various landlords. The company intervened and an arrangement was
arrived at whereby the company provided all the tools necessary for
the working of the coal and undertook to buy all produced. A chute
complete with tippler was erected in the tunnel cutting for loading
the coal into wagons as seen in this photograph.
