Doyen of the winding engines at Whitfield
is the massive horizontal engines made in 1915 for the Hesketh pit by
the Worsley Mesnes Co.. It has 36 inch cylinders and a 6ft. stroke,
Cornish steam inlet and exhaust valves and a 20ft. diameter parallel
drum. After nationalisation the engine was fitted with every conceivable
type of sophisticated gadgetry and in this condition the engines were
preserved after the Hesketh pit last drew coal on Friday 16 January.
