In 913 Ethelfleda, Lady of the Mercians, began to lay out a new town with the castle at its centre, based on a former Danish settlement. This 18th century plan shows the land belonging to the Earl of Northampton on the north side of the River Tame dominated by the castle itself and with houses and plots clearly laid out in Market Street. |
