Thomas Mawson (1861-1933) was one of the leading garden and landscape architects of his day with commissions all over the world. He became the first President of the Institute of Landscape Architects in 1929.

His designs for Hanley Park show a strong Arts and Crafts influence. The park opened on 20 June 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee.
