Sidney Fountain, Stafford 1889
The statue was originally gilded and was unveiled on 4 July 1889.
It was replaced by a lamp by 1906.
The fountain was destroyed in 1928 when a motor van ran into it.
Thomas Sidney was born in a house on goal square, now occupied by Radio
Rentals.
He was educated at Stafford Grammar School and went on to become
Lord mayor of London, 1853-1854. He was also Conservative MP for Stafford
between 1847 and
1852, and Liberal MP between 1860 and 1865.
