Whatever subject
we want to study in the medieval period, we can't ignore the
church and certainly not its records, because it was probably
the single largest bureaucratic institution of the time. One
of the major series of medieval records we hold are the registers
of the bishops of Lichfield. These were the main administrative
record of the diocese and their contents relate to a wide range
of matters of which the bishop wished to keep a permanent record.
Occasionally these matters could include criminal activity.
